Winning the 4th Annual Steppin’ Out with the Stars Talent Showcase

I was selected as a finalist from thousands of entries and edged out three other finalists for the opportunity to perform at Steppin’ Out with the Stars 2008 Gala. With Keith on bass and Keita on percussion, we performed live for a panel of judges and, according to the Dimock Center’s press release, “energized the audience” at Scullers Jazz Club on Monday, September 29th. “His trio edged out three other artists/ensembles for the opportunity to perform on the main stage at this year’s Steppin’ Out gala Saturday, November 8th.”

We performed my new single “A Better Way” and the best selling single from “Water’s Edge”, “You Know Me”. The show lineup includes such great jazz and R&B artists as Lala Hathaway, Andre Ward, Monty Alexander, Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spaulding, Kendrick Oliver, Wannetta Jackson, Larry Watson, Julia Nixon and Samba Tremeterra.

Thanks to all of you who showed up in support. This was fun and the show in front of an aduience of 3,000 will be very exciting.

About Dimock, in case you don’t know… (from their website)

The Dimock Center, founded on July 1, 1862 as the New England Hospital for Women and Children, was the first hospital in New England opened and operated by women for women, and only the second in the country. Noted prominently for its role in the history of women in medicine, Dimock strives to continue in the innovative spirit of trailblazers like Dr. Marie Zakrzewska, who established the hospital, and Mary Eliza Mahoney, the country’s first black nurse who studied here in 1879. Our nine-acre campus was designated as a National Historic Site in 1985 and a National Historic Landmark in 1991. Today, as the largest community based agency in Roxbury, Dimock serves thousands upon thousands of children, adults and families each year.
Dimock is a local and national model for the delivery of comprehensive health and human services. Our Health Care programs provide health maintenance, screening, immunizations, and prevention for adults and children with specialized clinics, including Women’s Health and OB/GYN, HIV/AIDs, eye care, and dental care. Our Child and Family Development programs offer group fitness activities, academic support and computer training, as well as a safe environment for children and adolescents. Our Behavioral Health program assists those struggling with mental illness, developmental delay substance abuse or violence issues. For many individuals and families, participation in Dimock’s programs and services literally saves lives.

The Blues Grill, June 13 – hitting the curve ball…

I was honored to work with my old friend Ricardo Monzon which is always a setting for magical things. The club is having a dispute with the major licensing organizations (BMI, ASCAP and SESAC) which is a story for another day, but until its resolved performers are not able to perform any of the music they license. Since that’s nearly every popular song over written, I performed four hours of my original music along with many improvisations.

Like many of the land bound towns close to the shore, after a beautiful day followed by a warm summer’s night the audience often wanders to the shore. Not the case this night. Attendance was very good and people were very generous with their applause and praise. This kind of warm response really fueled the music. I had a fantastic time and think they did as well. Thank you again to everyone who made it out that night. I’m looking forward to the next show.

I am in the middle of writing a blog about the recent behavior of ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. If you’re interested, keep your eyes open for it. Be well.

June 11 at the Revolution in Boston

The Revolution turned out to be an interesting night. There was a booking mix-up as happens occasionally so there were three bands performing that night. We had to quickly scramble to make sure everyone got on stage somewhere near their originally scheduled time. The good news was that there was a very good turnout for the night.

The Revolution is adorned with rock memorabilia and very comfortably fitted with a number of sofa pits as well as traditional bar stools and stands. The club’s staple are DJ’s and they have a couple of nights a week with live music spotlights. I think their typical performance is more pop/rock oriented so we take them a little by surprise when we hit the stage.

We hit at 9:00 and had a very good show. One of the highlights has to be Keita Ogawa, our percussionist who during his solo on Rigamaroll had the chef come dancing out of the kitchen to enjoy the music. Keita has been getting some big name gigs with Yo Yo Ma and Tiger Okoshi and I think the experience is upping his game. He was incredible which elevated all of us. I swear I’ve never seen Keith (Kirkpatrick, our ever solid bassist) smile so much.

The results of the April Newport Jazz Fest contest are in… Thanks.

I am sorry it took a couple of days to post this… I have been swamped. But I want to thank you for all of your support over the last two months. We placed 3rd for April’s JVC Newport Jazz Festival contest at OurStage. I don’t know what it’s going to take to get the Festival Board to notice us, but a 1st place in March and a 3rd in April is a pretty good start.

I can’t tell you how much your support means to me. It’s uplifting and encouraging in an industry with too many knocks and disappointments. It just re-enforces for me that I am performing for you, not the festival boards or media companies. I hope you make it to a show some time soon and I get a chance to thank you in person.

The JVC contest continues into July. Then the board picks two of the top bands from the OurStage contests to perform at the festival. This year’s line-up is amazing and the festival just keeps getting bigger and better every year. So hopefully 2008 is the year we debut. Peace to you and yours… and be well.

Thanks! You are the best…

Recently I asked you to help the band out for an online contest. I want to thank you for being such a solid friend, and taking the time to vote for us in the going.com contest. The voting closed October 6 and we ended up in 3rd… Not too shabby.

The bands selected to perform on Tuesday are both very good and well deserving, with Lansdowne and Pete Kilpatrick getting the votes needed to open for the show. So hopefully I’ll see you at an upcoming show. My calendar is posted on my website (http://billchampitto) and on myspace at http://myspace.com/billchampitto.

I realty do appreciate your support and wish you and your family all the best. Be well.

New faces, old faces…always good music

So recently I’ve introduced a new player – an old friend actually – to the band. Keith Kirkpatrick has joined me on Bass. He’s a veteran with a lot of experience and those of you who met him in Saratoga know how solid he is.

Also, my good friends Keita Ogawa and singer Hiromi Suda will be traveling to Brazil to study and perform. So you’ll be seeing more of Ricardo Monzon who will be joining me again for a series of shows. Because of Ricardo’s busy schedule, you may be seeing some others sitting in on percussion over the summer.

I have a great summer calendar and I hope you get a chance to check out some of those outdoor gigs and festivals… I look forward to seeing you. Be well.

Radio and media attention for emerging artists…

Why is it with the number of incredible musicians and artists in the area there are so few opportunities for exposure and support by local media? With that said, I was just informed by the folks at PIXY103 (WPXC) “Cape Cod’s Rock” that some of my songs will be included on their “Homegrown” show. The show airs Continue reading “Radio and media attention for emerging artists…”
